Prof. Dr. Peter Lindner

Peter Lindner is professor of economic geography at Frankfurt University since 2006. He received his PhD from Erlangen-Nuremberg University, was a fellow at the Program in Agrarian Studies at Yale University and is regularly teaching at the Moscow School of Social and Economic Sciences in Moscow.

His research interests are in the field of economic and social geography, especially focusing on globalization and transformation studies.

In economic contexts, private property rights, anonymous transactions or trust in the efficiency of markets are often considered as “natural facts”. Questioning these taken-for-granted realities key themes of my research are: How are goods as well as markets socially produced? How are they reproduced? How are they modified? This perspective reveals them not only as context-bound, but also as the result of a continuous performance far from being “natural”. Socio-spatial differences and disparities thereby often figure as a starting point which unveils the fact that a constructivist view on goods and markets has always to deal with unequal power relations.

Regionally, my work concentrated in recent years on the establishment of a market economy in the once centrally-planned systems of Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. This process of economic restructuring for which authors as different as Michel Callon and Joseph Stiglitz use depictions as “laboratory” or “socio-economic experiment” uncovered widespread misunderstandings about the foundations of the functioning of market economies. The introduction of personalised property rights, the disentangling of public and private goods or the individualisation of success and failure are examples for central pillars of the “project marked economy” which developed in transformation countries quite different from what was expected in the early 1990ies.
