Alexander M. Bürger

I am a PhD student at the Biogeography and Biodiversity lab of the Department of Physical Geography at the Goethe-University Frankfurt.

In my doctoral studies within the Quartz island II project I focus on the biogeography of quartz islands and the functional diversity of their specific flora. I am working comparing quartz islands from five different regions in South Africa to study the effect of a broad bioclimatic gradient.

My thesis is supervised by  Prof. Dr. Severin Irl and Dr. Ute Schmiedel (University of Hamburg). In the Quartz island II project I work furthermore in cooperation with PhD student Katharina Meyer (University of Hamburg),  Dr. Pia Maria Eibes and Dr. Jens Oldeland. 

My research interests include:

  • Habitat island biogeography
  • Functional diversity of plants
  • Biodiversity and endemism of habitat islands
  • Vegetation ecology of arid zones in Southern Africa
